The Rosamunde Quartet features four members from top orchestras: U.S.-based violist Teng Li, principal of the Chicago Symphony, and cellist Nathan Vickery of the New York Philharmonic, joined by Noah Bendix-Balgley, first concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic, and violinist Shanshan Yao of Kammerakademie Potsdam. The quartet meets only a few times a year for rare performances, including a seven-city tour last March.
For its Ravinia debut, the ensemble will perform George Walker’s String Quartet No. 1 (Lyric). Walker (1922–2018) was the first Black composer to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1996. The Lyric movement has become recognized as orchestral music in its own right, similar to Barber’s Adagio for Strings.
