“Be a pelican, not a peli-can’t.” Fox Lake kicks off its fourth installment of Pelican Palooza, celebrating the Lake County village’s local business, photography, and the big-beaked bird. The American white pelican migrates to Fox Lake from mid-March through early April, so the name is fitting. Participating establishments, known as Pelican Partners, offer special offers and feature the Aves-themed scavenger hunt. Visitors can join the photo contest, kids’ crafts, photo exhibits, pelican education, and more. The event also features themed events hosted by the Fox Lake District Library, Lake County Forest Preserve educators, and more. The Lake County village shopping event also hosts its Pelican Palooza photo contest. Submissions will be posted to the Village of Fox Lake Parks and Recreation Facebook page and displayed at the area’s library following the event’s duration. Entries with the most Facebook likes will be awarded prizes. Visit the library to pick up a Pelican Craft Kit in the library’s children’s department. Participants must email photos to marketing@foxlake.org by Monday, April 17. Shop Fox Lake locally through Friday, April 16, and beyond.

The Lake County Forest Preserve District’s Bess Bower Dunn Museum is celebrating its fifth born day. The venue, formerly the Lake County Discovery Museum for 40 years in Wauconda, now dons the name of the land of lakes’ first official historian (and genealogist) in Libertyville. The LCFPD venue features exhibits like “Prehistoric Lake County,” “The First People,” “An American Frontier,” “Innovations and Preservation,” and several visiting exhibitions. The Dunn’s calling card is a life-sized dryptosaurus that roamed the land of lakes before human existence. The Libertyville museum will host educational programming, nature play and crafts, and more during the celebration. Visitors to the nationally accredited museum receive free admission by donating a nonperishable food or toiletry item.

Friday-Sunday, March 31-April 2; Fri.-Sat.: 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Sun.: noon-4:30 p.m. Dunn Museum, 1899 W. Winchester Rd., Libertyville.
