The month of January continues to move along with a variety of activities for everyone. So many fun things are happening that you might have to make some tough decisions on what events you'll have to skip. Let's look at things to do this weekend, January 20-22,2023.

There is a city-wide showcase of art in Waukegan. A performance in Grayslake creates a circus-like atmosphere. In Vernon Hills, they have an event that is all about the Year of the Rabbit. A world-renowned sculptor will be in Highland Park. They will be pouring plenty of vino in Antioch. Let's look at the top five things to do this weekend, January 20-22, 2023.
The city’s famed ArtWauk “paints” the town with sculptures, film, theatre, comedy, music, performance art, food, and more. The free admission Saturday art event opens the doors to all art galleries throughout Waukegan. So fill your artistic void with the ever-extravagant monthly ArtWauk in Downtown Waukegan. In addition to the portraits, sculptures, and other creative vibes, munch on some delicious dining options downtown or feel the flow of the tunes from the live entertainment. Lake County Libation Trail partners Nightshade and Dark’s Pandemonium Brewing, and Oppidan Spirits offer delectable brews and spirits in the downtown area of the City of Progress. Visitors ages 21 and older are encouraged to try Bradbury brewhouse’s The End of the Beginning, a U.S. cultivated noble hop Contessa beer. The Dandelion Art Gallery showcases its “A Beautiful World Exhibit” showcase featuring youth artists ages five through 18 years old. The Ray Bradbury-themed studio’s evening festivities include a community canvas, artist meet and greet, live demonstrations, and more. The Belvidere Discount Mall across town shows the 1983 renowned comedy flick “Trading Places” directed by John Landis and starring Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd, and the 1995 cult classic “Mallrats” featuring Shannen Doherty, Jason Lee, Ben Affleck, and the film’s director and actor Kevin Smith. The Belvidere screenings run during the colder months of ArtWauk through March 18.

“(S)He’d, (they’d) fly through the air with the greatest of ease. A daring young (wo)man on the flying trapeze.” The James Lumber Center for Performing Arts at the College of Lake County hosts The Great DuBois. This two-individual tandem circus show of Michael DuBois and Viktoria Grimmy showcases myriad skills like stunts, contortion, aerial, magic, unicycle use, juggling and more, complemented by their humor. The unique duet attains various notable credits, including the 2017 film “The Greatest Showman,” starring Hugh Jackman, Tony Award-winning “Pippin” on Broadway, Britney Spears’ “World Circus Tour” and more. This must-see, all-ages show also offers a free juggling workshop after the show.

We now enter 12 months of that “wascally wabbit.” Hawthorn Mall hosts festivities for its Year of the Rabbit celebration in the lower level of H&M court. This Chinese Lunar New Year signifies longevity, peace, and prosperity in the country above’s culture. The Vernon Hills box social is highlighted by a performance by the Korean Performing Arts Institute of Chicago, fare samplings from CM Chicken and Tous Les Jours, a story time event at Barbara’s Bookstore, a Mahjong game table at BHOP Esports, and paper lantern craft-making at The Painted Penguins. Visitors can also delight in face painting, balloon twisting, tying a red ribbon to the wishing tree for good fortune, dancing, and a raffle. Visit ShopHawthornMall.com to register.

Visit the Art Center of Highland Park to view the work of sculptor Omri Amrany. The Fine Art Studio of Roblatt-Amrany opened its door in 1992 and, since then created over 300 bronze figurative sculptures, memorials, and monuments across the globe. Amrany’s iconic piece of a dunking Michael Jordan sitting outside Chicago’s United Center is one of his most renowned works. In addition, the Highwood sculptor has produced various sportsmen and women across other professional leagues. Register online at TheArtCenterHp.org.

“Wine is bottled poetry,” stated by “Treasure Island” and “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” author Robert Louis Stevenson. Stroll through the quaint downtown for the village’s Winter Wine Walk. While sampling different vino flavors, visit Antioch’s unique stores and restaurants. The event admission includes a commemorative wine glass, event menu, divine eats, a bottle of wine, and entry to a free raffle drawing. Visitors can purchase online at Antioch.IL.Gov.
