Escape the winter blues and enjoy the season's beauty at Volo Bog State Natural Area's Annual WinterFest. The WinterFest experience kicks off indoors with the sounds of Harper’s Back Porch Revue, an eclectic ensemble of nearly 20 musicians. Attendees can admire and celebrate the winners of Volo Bog's 37th annual Nature Photo Contest. Upstairs in the visitor center, WinterFest offers a variety of winter crafts for both kids and adults. Friends of Volo Bog will have refreshments available for purchase. For those eager to explore the great outdoors, Volo Bog State Natural Area has a lineup of activities, including 45-minute bog tours. The U.S. National Natural Landmark event is highlighted by a snow sculpting contest that invites children and adults alike to showcase their artistic talents with prizes. Bog visitors are encouraged to bring skis or snowshoes for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and hiking on the five miles of trails. The state natural area suggests a $10 donation from adults, while children can enjoy the festivities for free. The city of Highland Park will come together for the 15th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, transforming a federal holiday into a powerful tribute to Dr. King’s enduring legacy through acts of community service. Hosted by the City of Highland Park’s Human Relations Advisory Group and the Park District of Highland Park, the event invites residents and guests to engage in various service projects facilitated by local organizations, fostering a spirit of unity and giving back.
Kicking off the day, the Recreation Center of Highland Park Parking Lot will host a drive-through donation event. The main program features presentations by by City of Highland Park Mayor Rotering and Park District of Highland Park Board President Grossberg. Brandon Buchanan, FACHE, System Assistant Vice President of Highland Park Hospital, will deliver a keynote address on health equity. Following the program, participants will disperse to engage in various service projects that aim to make a positive impact on the Highland Park community.
