Here are the things to do this weekend December 20-22, 2024.

1. Artwauk and Genesee Theatre Holiday Events in Waukegan

Waukegan is the place to be this December, with a variety of holiday events that blend art, music and culture into an unforgettable season of celebration. The Genesee Theatre sets the stage with a festive lineup of performances, beginning with Dancenter North’s “The Magic of the Nutcracker.” This dazzling production features over 100 performers, elaborate sets and Tchaikovsky’s enchanting score. On December 21, the theatre hosts “Home for the Holidays 2024,” an extraordinary concert uniting Peabo Bryson, Oleta Adams, Ruben Studdard and Haley Reinhart. These world-renowned musicians will perform Christmas classics. The holiday magic continues with “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Musical,” a heartwarming adaptation of the 1964 stop-motion Christmas animated TV special. Meanwhile, ArtWauk, a monthly celebration of creativity hosted by the Waukegan Arts Council, invites attendees to explore art galleries, enjoy live performances and shop for unique handmade goods. 2. “It’s a Wonderful Life: A Radio Play” at Improv Playhouse in Libertyville

The Improv Playhouse in Libertyville presents “It’s A Wonderful Life – A Radio Play.” This cherished holiday production brings the timeless story of George Bailey to life in a classic radio play format. Set in the idyllic small-town of Bedford Falls, the tale follows George as he battles self-doubt and sacrifices his dreams during the trials and tribulations during World War II and the Great Depression, only to rediscover faith and purpose. Audiences have praised the performance for its heartfelt storytelling and talented cast, with one attendee describing it as “a downtown Chicago performance brought to Libertyville.” The fascinating radio-style production invites theatergoers to close their eyes and envision the magic of 1940s broadcasting. 3. Christmas Luminary Hike at Quentin Road Baptist Church in Lake Zurich

The Christmas Luminary Hike at Quentin Road Baptist Church offers a magical holiday experience. This family-friendly event takes visitors on an enchanting journey through a luminary-lit forest trail, recreating the story of the first Christmas. As you navigate the trail to Bethlehem, you’ll encounter shepherds, angels, wise men and townspeople who bring the nativity story to life. 4. Vintage Holidays in Historic Downtown Long Grove

Historic Downtown Long Grove comes alive this holiday season with its annual Vintage Holidays celebration. This festive event invites visitors to rediscover the charm of a classic holiday experience with quaint shops, twinkling lights and a calendar packed with activities. Horse-drawn carriage rides through the historic downtown offer a nostalgic journey. Santa Claus makes appearances throughout the season, spreading cheer and taking photos with families at Covered Bridge Park and various village locations. Carolers angelic voices from local resonates through the village. Shoppers can explore Long Grove’s unique boutiques and restaurants, many offering special promotions, seasonal treats and charming holiday decor. 5. “Holiday Sing-along and Pajama Party” at Citadel Theatre in Lake Forest

Citadel Theatre invites families to its inaugural “Holiday Sing-along and Pajama Party.” Attendees, encouraged to come dressed in cozy pajamas or festive attire, will sing along to beloved holiday tunes like “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “Dreidel Dreidel,” “Jingle Bells” and more Santa and Mrs. Claus will make special appearances, adding magic to the celebration. The event also embraces the spirit of giving, asking attendees to bring unwrapped games to donate to Families Helping Families Chicagoland.
