Lake County thrives on diversity, and at the heart of that spirit are the many Latino-owned businesses that bring passion, culture and flavor to our community. From family-owned restaurants serving authentic dishes to innovative entrepreneurs shaping the future, these businesses are more than places to shop and dine; they are stories of heritage, hard work and pride. This Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the Latino-owned businesses that shape our thriving community.
As a leader in Lake County’s tourism industry, we strive to be a forum that highlights diversity and the Latino community. Let’s take a look at the Latino-owned businesses in the land of lakes.
This list does not include every Latino-owned business in Lake County, so if we missed any, let us know so we can add them!
Lake County is home to a thriving public art scene, with murals and installations spread across nearly every community. Each piece adds color and vibrancy to local streets, transforming blank walls into powerful expressions of culture and creativity. Collectively, they showcase the stories and identities that make Lake County unique.
The City of Waukegan continues to thrive as a hub for public art, with local talent bringing powerful stories to life on its walls. Waukegan native Everett Reynolds has created another mural in May 2025, this time for the Puerto Rican Society. Reynolds has played an integral role in shaping much of the citys mural landscape. His latest work highlights the Puerto Rican community, reflecting its history, resilience and pride while adding to Waukegans creative spirit.
Brazilian-born muralist Fernando Chamarelli brought his signature burst of color to Fox Lake in October 2019 with a striking piece on the east wall of the Lakes Realty building, right at Route 12 and Grand Avenue. Known internationally for his bold, geometric style and radiant palettes, Chamarelli designed the mural to echo the charm of a vintage postcard. The vibrant bird-like figure, alive with fiery reds, oranges and golds, has become a community landmark and the perfect backdrop for Fox Lake’s annual Pelican Palooza celebration.
Latino-owned restaurants in Lake County showcase authentic flavors, family traditions and exuberant culture. From classic dishes to modern takes, these local spots highlight the diversity of Latino cuisine. Whether youre craving a quick bite or a sit-down meal, these businesses offer something unique for every palate.

Dos Amigos, meaning two friends, was founded by Sergio and Oscar and has become a beloved staple in Libertyville. Their menu celebrates authentic Mexican flavors, featuring scratch-made salsas, rich moles, fresh tamales and time-honored family recipes passed down through generations.
Perched on the shores of Nippersink Lake, El Puerto offers a lakeside dining experience with stunning sunset views from its spacious patio. With three dining rooms, a welcoming bar and plenty of outdoor space complete with a fireplace and boat docks, its an ideal spot for gatherings of all kinds. The menu features favorites like sizzling fajitas, enchiladas and fresh seafood, paired with house-made cocktails that make every visit memorable.
La Mera Mera Taqueria in Libertyville is known for its elite tacos, crafted from regional recipes spanning Mexico’s southeast, Pacific coast, central and northern regions. The menu also features favorites like gorditas, volcanes, tortas and more, plus a new lineup of additional dishes. Guests can pair their meal with a refreshing margarita or michelada.
The name Mijo, meaning “my son,” honors Ivan, Martina and the family at the heart of the business. After Martina won third place in a 2018 tamale competition in Lake County, she was inspired to share her exceptional Mexican cooking and Mijo’s was born. In 2022, Mijo’s expanded into Lake Villa with support from Harbor Brewing Co. and 9th Hour Brewing Co., followed by Six Flags Great America in 2023 and now in Fox Lake. This family-owned spot brings traditional Mexican flavors with a modern twist, offering vegetarian dishes, Mexican and American breakfast choices and classic desserts like flan, all crafted from time-honored family recipes.
Nativo Mexican Cuisine in Bannockburn offers an elevated dining experience that blends the richness of traditional Mexican recipes with inventive, modern twists. Their menu goes beyond the expected, drawing inspiration from global flavors while staying rooted in Mexican culinary traditions. Guests can indulge in unique creations such as mango-chili tacos alongside expertly crafted margaritas, all in a stylish, upscale setting.
Pixca Seasonal American Bistro in Highland Park highlights locally sourced ingredients with a menu that changes with the seasons. Executive Chef Fernando draws on his roots in Oaxaca, Mexico, where he first learned the value of farming and wood-grilling, to craft dishes that blend tradition and innovation.
