Mijo’s story began after Martina entered a local tamale competition in 2018 and took third place. What started as a small operation at the Kenosha Public Market grew into appearances at local festivals, catering events and additional Lake County locations before the family opened its Fox Lake restaurant. The name “Mijo,” meaning “my son” in Spanish, is a nod to the family at the heart of the business.

The menu features Mexican favorites including tacos, burritos, quesadillas, tortas, fajitas and the family’s popular barbacoa, with a variety of meats and flavorful toppings to choose from.
