Discover the people, places and stories that shaped Grayslake at the Grayslake Heritage Center & Museum, located in the heart of downtown Grayslake. Opened in 2010 through a partnership between the Village of Grayslake and the Grayslake Historical Society, the 11,000-square-foot museum blends modern exhibition space with local history—including the community’s original Village Hall, which began as a one-room schoolhouse and was expanded in 1895.

Explore multiple galleries featuring permanent and rotating exhibitions, historic photographs, artifacts and interactive displays. The museum’s award-winning permanent exhibition, Embracing Change: The Growth of Grayslake, traces the community’s transformation from its early prairie and farming roots through the arrival of the railroad, growth of local businesses and industries, civic life and the development of the Grayslake visitors know today. Hands-on and sensory elements make the experience engaging for visitors of all ages.

Don’t miss the museum’s 3,000-square-foot annex, home to some of the Grayslake Historical Society’s larger artifacts, including a 19th-century hearse, kerosene wagon, historic tools and agricultural equipment, a Model T truck and “Wilbur,” a 1954 fire engine manufactured in Grayslake.

Beyond its exhibitions, the Heritage Center serves as a gathering place for the community with educational programs, lectures, living-history presentations, music, outdoor movies, family activities and special events throughout the year. The facility also includes archives, collections storage, classroom space, a community room and museum store.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast, exploring downtown Grayslake or looking for a family-friendly way to learn more about Lake County, the Grayslake Heritage Center & Museum offers an engaging look at the stories and traditions that continue to shape the community.
