With honey bee colonies facing unprecedented losses nationwide, the Lake County Farm Bureau is offering a timely educational class to help beekeepers protect and strengthen their hives. The workshop will be held on Saturday, May 3, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., at the Farm Bureau Office and is open to both new and experienced beekeepers.
The class will be led by Perry Plescia, a veteran beekeeper with over 30 years of experience and past president of the Lake County Beekeepers Association. Perry will share practical management techniques for maintaining healthy hives, as well as insights into the growing threats facing honey bees today.
The cost to attend is $10 for LCFB members and $15 for non-members.
This educational effort comes at a critical time. A recent national survey found that commercial beekeepers reported an average colony loss of 62% between June 2024 and February 2025. Alarmingly, several Lake County beekeepers experienced total losses, losing all of their hives.
