1. Fright Fest Presented by Snickers at Six Flags Great America

“The night is dark and full of terrors.” Six Flags Great America’s Fright Fest presented by SNICKERS® is officially back this weekend. Thrill-seekers of all ages can experience all of the Halloween festivities and coasters during the day. But be warned: once the sun sets, the frights are in full effect and there is nowhere to hide. Be vigilant as you never know what frightening creature could be waiting around the corner for you in the Scare Zones located throughout the park. The fest is highlighted by your favorite roller coasters (some transformed), seven haunted houses, including all-new haunted houses 13th Order and Infected, live shows, ghoulish eats and more. This spooktacular festival puts visitors in the Halloween spirit for eight weekends. Six Flags Great America’s Fright Fest presented by SNICKERS® runs on select days through November 3.

Saturday-Sunday; September 14-15; Sat.: 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Sun.: 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Various admissions. Six Flags Great America, 1 Great America Pkwy., Gurnee.

2. Ravinia Festival's Final Weekend Featuring Mary J. Blige, Morrissey and Chicago Philharmonic

Ravinia Festival is set to close the curtains on another fantastic, and they’re going out with a bang. The weekend kicks off this Friday as nine-time, Grammy-winning singer Mary J. Blige takes the stage in her second-consecutive year after debuting on the Highland Park stage in 2018. The fun continues as Morrissey with special guest Interpol is set to rock the stage Saturday. The country’s longest-running outdoor music fest cues the finale with Fiesta Ravinia. The celebration of Mexican Independence Day features day-long festivities for all ages and wraps up with a live to film performance of Disney Pixar’s “Coco” with the Chicago Philharmonic.

3. Fiestas Patrias Parade and Festival in Waukegan

¡Feliz dia de la Independencia Mexicana en Waukegan! This two-day festival s celebrates Mexican Independence Day. The event features four live bands, a kid-zone full of activities, delicious Mexican cuisine and a parade. One-hundred units highlight this parade, and if you can’t make it for the festivities, they will be broadcasted live via Telemundo-Univision as well as Facebook.

Saturday-Sunday, September 14-15; Noon-11:30 p.m. Saturday Admission: $20, Sunday is free of admission. Downtown Waukegan, Genesee Street, Water and Sheridan Roads, Waukegan.

4. Gorton Community Center's Summer Block Party

With fall around the corner, wave farewell to Lake County’s warmest season by celebrating it at Gorton Community Center’s Annual Summer Block Party. The event grows every year and is the perfect opportunity to bring the family out for one last day of summer fun before the leaves change colors. The Lake Forest party features activities for the kids, delicious eats for purchase from local food trucks, a costume contest, a juggler, balloon art and more. Make a stop by every vendor table to complete your block party passport for a chance to win a prize. Once the sun goes down, grab a seat and enjoy an outdoor movie. This year the film is “Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse.” Gorton Community Center encourages movie viewers to bring lawn chairs and blankets. This event is free of admission.

5. Alpine Races in Lake Zurich

Lace up your running shoes and get ready to race through Lake Zurich for the Alpine Races event taking place on Sunday. This family-friendly event offers many different race options for all skill levels and age groups. Alpine Races offers the half marathon for more experienced runners, and ranges to a quarter-mile race for children. The half-marathon and 5K runs through the neighborhoods of Lake Zurich and provide scenic views to competitors along the lake route. Awards categories are distinguished by age group. Fare and refreshments will be provided at the finish line.

Sunday, September 15; 7:30 a.m. Admission: $5-$70. Alpine Races, 77 S. Old Rand Rd., Lake Zurich.
