1. Hurricane Harbor Opening Weekend / Memorial Day Weekend / Mardi Gras Hangover at Six Flags Great America

Make a splash this weekend at Hurricane Harbor’s opening weekend. Hang ten on the surfing wave simulator, catch a kahuna in the wave pool, take a trip down one of the extreme water slides or lounge on the lazy river at the Six Flags Great America water park. After you’ve cooled yourself off in the water, spend the rest of the day enjoying the Gurnee coaster mainstay. Throughout this Memorial Day weekend, the park features live entertainment, high-energy shows and more. Be one of the first people to ride the new Six Flags ride, Mardi Gras Hangover, the largest looping coaster in the world. The ride officially opens to the public on Saturday, May 26.

2. Remembering the USS Cole & Navy Tails Exhibit

On October 12, 2000, a United States Navy ship named the USS Cole was bombed in Yemen by an infamous terrorist group. In honor of Memorial Day, the National Museum of the American Sailor will pay tribute to those lost during the attack. The Naval Station Great Lakes museum will host USS Cole survivor, Master Chief Pamela Jacobson as she delivers remarks about the day. Listen to her powerful story and stick around to view artifacts on display related to the attack. After the commemoration, visit the rest of the museum to peruse the latest exhibit, Navy Tails. Attendees will learn the various roles of animals in the Navy and their importance. The Navy Tails exhibit runs through July 12.

3. Food Truck Friday

A dozen food trucks are driving to the Lincolnshire Corporate Center on Friday, and you should too. Choose your favorite fare at Lincolnshire’s Food Truck Fridays from the following vendors: Marty’s Eat Wagon, Rogue Curbside Kitchen, Mothers Truckn Good Food, Mario’s Cart, Best Truckin’ BBQ, Grill Chasers, Swirl Café, Toasty Cheese, Toasty Taco, Happy Lobster and Louie B. Fresh. The foodie event occurs every two weeks through August 31.

4. Essence of Freedom 5K

Lace up your running shoes and jog or walk to Deerfield for the annual Essence of Freedom 5K. Participants will enjoy the benefits of the chip timing system and other perks throughout the race. T-shirts, goodie bags, music, food and more await runners across the finish line. Stick around after the race for the annual Memorial Day parade and ceremonies beginning at 10 a.m. Proceeds from the run provide support to active duty military and veterans for expenses through Support Our Soldiers Freedom, Inc. Competitors can register online at essenceoffreedomrun.com or onsite before the race.

5. Illinois Brass Band Memorial Day Concert

The Illinois Brass Band boasts a large repertoire of accolades and musical backgrounds to form one phenomenally talented group. Enjoy an afternoon of free, outstanding music in honor of Memorial Day at the Round Lake Beach Cultural & Civic Center this Sunday. Revel in sounds from the 30-person roster on the center’s lawn by the outdoor amphitheater. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be moved inside the center.

Sunday, May 27; 2 p.m. Free admission. Round Lake Beach Cultural & Civic Center, 2007 Civic Center Way, Round Lake Beach.
