Alas, the official start of summer has arrived and like any good ol' friend, has brought plenty of exciting gifts upon its return. Summer also means sports here in Lake County. With the USA not in the World Cup this year, who are you rooting for? Whether its a powerhouse or an underdog, watch the World Cup at one of these fine Lake County establishments. Futbol not your pace? Did you know that Lake County is hosting the KPMG Women's PGA Championship beginning on Tuesday? Top female golfers from around the world will converge in Kildeer at Kemper Lakes Golf Club to play for the purse. 1. Long Grove Strawberry Fest

Fruit fanatics rejoice! Historic Downtown Long Grove’s illustrious Strawberry Festival returns to the quaint village this weekend. Partake in three days of all things strawberry including new and unique cuisine incorporating the super fruit, food eating contests and multiple live music groups across three stages. The live entertainment schedule includes Wedding Banned, Hi Infidelity, Mr. Blotto and more. Bring the entire family along as children will enjoy the Kid Zone highlighted by a water balloon toss, cornhole, face painting and more.

Friday-Sunday, June 22-24; Fri.: 11 a.m.  – 11 p.m., Sat.: 10 a.m.-11 p.m. Sun.: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Admission: Ages 12+ $5 per person, per day; Under 12: Free. Historic Downtown Long Grove.

2. 23rd annual Grayslake Arts Festival & Wine Tasting

Few things pair better than great art and fine wine. Visit the 23rd annual Grayslake Arts Festival & Wine tasting this weekend to indulge in the two together. Peruse the artwork from over 60 juried artists and taste dozens of vino blends from around the world at $2 per pour. Accompany your favorite libation with fare from various food vendors and enjoy the live entertainment from Dance Connection, Slam Funk and the Mike Flack Orchestra. The festival will provide activities for children and also features an art exhibit from local high school students.

Saturday, June 23; 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Free admission. Historic Downtown Grayslake, Whitney Street.

3. Lambs Farm Fun & Fit Family Day

Dash over to Lambs Farm with your kin to the Fun & Fit Family Day event. Participants are invited to run or walk as the event’s route takes attendees around Old School Forest Preserve in Libertyville. Runners will race a 5K while walkers will stride two miles. Following the race, various family-friendly activities will begin including music from a live DJ, refreshments, games, JG’s Reptile Road Show, a balloon twister, face painting, inflatables and more.

Saturday, June 23; 9 a.m. – noon. Admission: $25 per person or $100 per family. Lambs Farm, 14245 W. Rockland Rd., Libertyville.

4. Key West Fest at Blarney Island

Though Jimmy Buffett may not be present, make no mistake that Blarney Island is the “Key West of the Midwest.” The famous island on the Chain O’Lakes brings authentic Key West music and sounds of the islands to northern Illinois. Relax on the water, grab a bite to eat and listen to the sweet tunes of live bands all weekend long at the Antioch party. To get to the island take the boat shuttle at Port O’ Blarney.

“Pinball Wizards” or those from any “Generation” will want to stop by Ravinia Festival this weekend to enjoy the melodies of many incredible artists. Award-winning singer and songwriter, Jill Scott will take the stage on Friday with special guests, The Roots. Come back on Saturday to listen to the sweet symphony of the Ravinia Festival Orchestra or hear Roger Daltrey with members of The Who, performing timeless classics. On Sunday evening, Janis Ian, known best for her hit single, “At Seventeen” graces the stage to cap off the harmonious Highland Park weekend.
