Things To Do This Weekend June 12-14, 2020

By: Jonathan Jones 06/11/2020

After another long absence, things to do this weekend June 12-14 has returned.

With these trying times, as we still try to get on the right side of this public health crisis, many events in the land of lakes have been canceled. Some of our favorites like the 92nd annual Lake County Fair, Ravinia Festival, musicals at the Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire, and more have all canceled events for the year.

While these events are postponed until 2021, many have reinvented their festivities in Lake County.

Between virtual events, outdoor activities and alfresco dining, Lake County is still the place to unwind after a long work week.

Here are your top five things to do this weekend June 12-14.

1. Virtual Ray Bradbury Dandelion Wine Fine Arts Festival in Waukegan

“No matter how hard you try to be what you once were, you can only be what you are here and now.” Those words ring true with as written from Ray Bradbury's Dandelion Wine. The Waukegan Park District and Illinois Arts Council festival has moved to virtual due to COVID-19 precautions. The annual free event features a live reading of Bradbury's Dandelion Wine from start to finish featuring celebrity Bradbury fans from around the galaxy, performances from festival musicians, short skits about the GreenTown author, a showcase of local artwork. Bradbury would've been 100 this August.

Saturday, June 13; 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Virtual. Free Admission. Waukegan Park District's Facebook page.

2. Party on Park Street in Mundelein

Tonight we're gonna party like it's 2020. Dine on some extra splendiferous bites compliments of three renowned local favorites: Park Street Craft Kitchen, Tina G's and Area Coffee. Support local restaurateurs as they are preparing for foodies' 90-minute reservations (calling ahead is recommended) in alfresco fashion. The fare destination will feature live entertainment like 176 South, School of Rock House Band and 413 from 5-9:30 p.m.

Saturday, June 13; 5-9:30 p.m. Free admission. Mundelein Outdoor Seating Area, 10 E. Park St., Mundelein.

FORE! It's that time of the season to work on the short game. Challenge your friends to mini scramble or a heads up game on the Round Lake Beach mini-golf course. The scenic course is challenging, highlighted by several waterfalls and unique putting greens. Make sure you have the break right so you can skink the perfect putt. Linksters must make online reservations before entering the course at Kristof's Entertainment Center. No walk-ins are permitted at this time.

Friday-Sunday, June 12-14; noon-9 p.m. Admission $8-$10. Kristof's Entertainment Center, 421 W. Rollins Rd, Round Lake Beach.

4. Drive-in Cabaret by Citadel Theatre at Gorton Community Center in Lake Forest

During these trying times, the Lake Forest theatre is staging an hour of musical hits provided by the performers of Citadel Theatre past. This limited-time presentation will not be in its traditional theatre due to COVID-19 restrictions but from the comfort of your car down the street at Gorton Community Center. The Drive-in Cabaret's sound will be transmitted through your car radio, ensuring you and your family's social distancing. Experience 60 minutes of Broadway in an innovative way. Tickets must be booked in advance, and one ticket is needed per vehicle. The attendant will provide you with the radio station's call number to hear the tunes. Gorton Community Center will not be open, so there is no access to restrooms.  The event will occur on Saturdays and Sundays through June 21.

Saturday-Sunday, June 13-14; 1 and 3 p.m. Tickets $40-$100. Gorton Community Center, 400 E. Illinois Rd., Lake Forest.

Seasonal veggies, fresh meats, eggs, fish, Wisconsin cheese, syrups, breads, pies, breakfasts and a slew of other treats just scratch the surface of the 26th annual Deerfield Farmers Market. However, due to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, the Deerfield Farmers Market will move away from its focus on "food, friends and fun" to a market dedicated to providing fare in a safe, open-air experience. Unfortunately, social and civic activities are eliminated for this year. Continue here to view the state guidelines for in-and-out farmers markets customers.
