Let's take a look at the top things to do this weekend July 5-7, as we say "ooh and ahh" to our favorite sparkly pyrotechnics.

Also, we'd like to wish the City of Highland Park a Happy 150th Born Day! You wear a century and a half well!

1. Six Flags Great America's 4th of July Fest/Maxx Force Debuts

Celebrate the country’s birthday at the Six Flags Great America and Hurricane Harbor amusement park. Besides the exciting 17-roller coasters the splashtastic slides at Hurricane Harbor and other fantastic thrills at Six Flags Great America, the five-day fest will feature a Coca-Cola® July 4th Zone with a live DJ, delicious eats, dance contests, live performances and a fireworks display each night before the park closes. Also, Maxx Force, the park’s 17th coaster will debut during the festival. The thrill ride will break three records: the fastest acceleration in North America taking riders from 0-to-78 mph in 1.8 seconds, it will become the tallest and fastest inversion coaster in the world as well.

Friday-Saturday, July 5-6; 10:30 a.m.-10 p.m. Various admissions. Six Flags Great America Pkwy., Gurnee.

2. Mundelein Community Days

Friends and family can put their John Hancock signature of approval to this declaration of summer festivities. Mundelein Community Days is highlighted by musical performances, food, drinks, arts and crafts, a car show, a carnival, a parade, a 5K run and much more. The Independence Day Fireworks Show is held on July 4 at 9:30 p.m. and the parade steps off on July 7 from the Mundelein Metra Station at 2 p.m. The Mundelein Community Days musical entertainment lineup includes Chicago Tribute Anthology, the Adam Ezra Group, Boy Band Night, Serendipity and more.

Friday-Sunday, July 5-7. Free admission. Downtown Mundelein, Seymour Avenue and Courtland Street, Mundelein.

3. Bristol Renaissance Faire in Kenosha

Even if you don’t own a DeLorean, you can take a trip back to the past to experience the 16th-century English Elizabethan era just over the Wisconsin border. The renowned Bristol Renaissance Faire in Kenosha features sword fighters, maidens, minstrels, jesters and a slew of other charismatic individuals from that time period. There are many photo opportunities like having the chance to meet and greet with legendary celebrities such as Queen Elizabeth and Robin Hood. The Faire also offers games, rides, arts & crafts, eats, live music and one-of-a-kind encounters with a spectacular cast of characters. The event runs nine weekends of the summer through September 2.

4. Chaka Khan and Michael McDonald at Ravinia Festival in Highland Park

“Tell Me Something Good.” How about a raspy-voiced diva from Chicago and a raspy-voiced singer from St. Louis and 15 Grammy Awards between the two on the same ticket Ravinia Festival’s stage? Chaka Khan (10 Grammys) is ranked in VH1’s list of the 100 Greatest Women of Rock & Roll and nominated twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Windy City native is “Every Woman.” Michael McDonald was a part of the legendary Steely Dan (which the band is performing later in the season on September 1-2) and the Doobie Brothers. The master of the ivory keys is known for “Taking it to the Streets,” “Sweet Freedom” “On My Own” and dozens of more hits.

5. Chicago Botanic Garden Art Festival in Glencoe

Take a stroll through the beautiful Chicago Botanic Gardens while browsing the works from more than 100-juried artists along the way. The Chicago Botanic Garden’s Art Festival is a one-of-a-kind event that showcases photography, paintings, ceramics, cement and a slew of other mediums that are all created with botanic materials. Purchase a breathtaking mural for yourself or admire the masterpieces at this annual Glencoe event.
