"While the merry bells keep ringing, may your every wish come true." - Andy Williams. The countdown is on and the festivities in Lake County are strong. The top things to do this weekend December 14-16 are sure to put anyone in the spirit!

The holidays can be overwhelming as we all know. We've tried to make them a little easier for you by compiling our picks for the top 10 holiday things to do in Lake County this year. We've also come up with a more in-depth guide for the holidays and you can find that here. You may also continue here for a list of all activities and events happening this weekend. We also want to help make your 'spirits' bright this year so we've gathered a list of some of the best libations to try out this holiday 'saison.'

1. Waukegan's HolidayWauk

Take a stroll down the festive streets of historic downtown Waukegan HolidayWauk. Discover the spirit of the season by meandering through the various art galleries, stores and pop-up shops around the city to find dozens of holiday festivities. The Waukegan event features a young artists show, ornament decorating, live performances, sing-alongs, merchandise sales, a bake sale and more throughout various downtown locations. Visit ArtWauk.com for more information. Grammy Award-winning Michael McDonald will also take the historic Genesee Theatre stage this weekend, performing his “Season of Peace: Holiday & Hits” tour. The former Doobie Brothers member released his album “Season of Peace: The Christmas Collection” in mid-October.

HolidayWauk: Saturday, December 15; 5-9 p.m. Free admission. Various locations throughout downtown Waukegan. Michael McDonald: Saturday, December 15; 8 p.m. Admission: $44.50-$102.50. Genesee Theatre, 203 N. Genesee St., Waukegan.

 

2. Santa's Cottage in Mundelein

This weekend marks the final opportunity for your little one to plea their case to be on the nice list at Santa’s Cottage in Mundelein. Visit the quaint cottage to meet Jolly Old Saint Nicholas for memories to last a lifetime. Parents are encouraged to bring their cameras to snap photos at one of Mundelein’s most cherished holiday events.

Saturday, December 15; Noon-3 p.m. Free admission. Mundelein Village Hall, 300 Plaza Cir., Mundelein.

3. Quentin Road Christmas Musical

Join one of Lake County’s most vivid holiday productions at the Quentin Road Christmas Musical. More than 300 stunning voices will cut through the sea of dramatic lights, intricate backdrops and dazzling visuals as the performance highlights the reason for the season. The Lake Zurich church musical follows the nativity story and is highlighted by the score orchestrated by David Clydesdale. The original show also features live animals, “flying angels” and a slew of other surprises in this Christmas spectacle. Visit QRChristmas.com to purchase tickets.

4. It's a Wonderful Life Radio Play at Improv Playhouse

“Remember, no man is a failure who has friends.” The Improv Playhouse Theater presents “It’s a Wonderful Life… A Radio Play” this weekend. The Libertyville performance center’s holiday tradition stages their rendition of the Frank Capra holiday classic. The play, performed in the fashion of a 1940s radio show, features the tale of George Bailey. The show’s protagonist puts his big dreams on hold to take over his father’s business who abruptly passes away. Bailey faces many adversities during his endeavor that essentially saves the town of Bedford Falls during the Great depression. With Bailey own on his luck, frustrated with life and questioning his own existence a guardian angel named Clarence tries to steer him away from suicide. This event is a BYOB event with a $5 corking fee. The Improv Playhouse will also serve mulled wine for purchase as well as milk and cookies free of charge.

5. Ice Sculpting at Chicago Botanic Garden

The sound of forged steel tearing through massive blocks of frozen water will be heard from the Chicago Botanic Garden this weekend. Talented artists display their ice sculpting as visitors can witness the frost fly as these masons use chainsaws, hand tools and a variety of other equipment to create their frozen masterpieces.  If you need a break from the chilly weather, head inside the Regenstein Center to view the Wonderland Express. This festive miniature model train display, the Wonderland Express, travels over bridges, waterfalls, gardens and more than 80 Chicagoland landmark replicas.

Ice Sculpting: Sunday, December 16; 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Admission: $8-$13. Wonderland Express: Friday-Sunday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Admission $8-$13. Chicago Botanic Garden, 1000 Lake Cook Dr., Glencoe.
