5. "Something Rotten" Opening Weekend at Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire

How do you compete with Shakespeare? You go to a soothsayer to figure out what the next “big hit” will be, of course! But when you find out the next big thing is a musical... things get a little nutty. Here’s a short clip of the soothsayer (Ross Lehman) explaining what “A Musical” is to Nick Bottom (KJ Hippensteel) from a recent rehearsal. WE BEGIN TONIGHT! #SomethingRottenMT #Chicago #ChicagoTheatre #ItsAMusical #NowPlaying

A post shared by Marriott Theatre (@marriotttheatre) on

Fifteen ninety-five. London, England. “Welcome to the Renaissance” where the writers write, and the brothers hate Shakespeare with so much spite. Nick and Nigel Bottom are brothers attempting to write the play of the ages, but their style is old news compared that of “The Bard.” A fortune teller foresees the play’s future and predicts the Bottom duo will create something far more nuanced; a production that includes song, dance and acting done simultaneously. The Bottoms achieve their eureka moment and set out to write the first musical in the history of the world. Fame isn’t as fantastic as it looks as the Bottoms create a musical about our favorite brunch treat: omelets. Nominated for nine Tony Awards when on Broadway (winning one award), this musical comedy is sure to take the egg.

Friday-Sunday, August 30-September 1; Fri.: 8 p.m., Sat.: 4 and 8 p.m., Sun.:1 and 4 p.m. Tickets: $47.71-$57.86. Marriott Theatre, 10 Marriott Dr., Lincolnshire.
