It's the time of year for you to be delightfully frightened and enjoy some spirits. You can get to the "core" of things in Long Grove. Another season at Ravinia comes to a close. There are plenty of things to "wine" about in Libertyville. Catching fish can win you prizes in Zion. Get ready for the top five things to do this weekend September 24-26.
Sit for a spell and enjoy the potion! The Spooks and Spirits Lake County, Illinois Autumn Celebration is underway. So many ghoulish and fall things to do for everyone. Get the thrills by day and frights by night as you brave the coasters and haunted attraction of
Six Flags Great America presented by SNICKERS. You can get A-MAIZE-D by corn mazes or pumpkin patches at
Didier Farms Pumpkinfest and
Richardson Adventure Farm. There are plenty of fall festivals and costume parades celebrating the change of seasons. If getting the living daylights scared out of you is your fancy, journey to
Dungeon of Doom in Zion and
Realm of Terror in Round Lake Beach. Adults ages 21 and older will be able to find locally made beers, vinos and spirits from over 20 stops provided by

“The fruit is what matters, not how gnarly or beautiful the apple tree is,” said American author A.W. Tozer. There will be bushels of fun at the annual Long Grove Apple Fest. You can walk throughout Historic Downtown Long Grove and indulge apples just the way you like them. Whether it’s baked in a pie, dipped in chocolate or caramel or freshly-picked there’s something for the whole family to enjoy. Take part in pie-eating contests and listen to live music throughout the three-day fruit fiesta from performing acts like Sixteen Candles, 7th Heaven, Libido Funk Circus, Charlie Foxtrot and many more. Admission is $5, and children ages six and under receive free admission.

U.S. Founding Father Benjamin Franklin once said, “Wine makes daily living easier, less hurried, with fewer tensions and more tolerance.” Live your best life at the first ever fall wine walk, Let’s Vino in the ‘Ville in Libertyville on Saturday. It’s a day for tasting wine, shopping and dining out on MainStreet Libertyville for visitors ages 21 and older. Each ticket comes with a shopping bag that includes a commemorative wine glass, $10 coupon redeemable at participating merchants, an event map and exclusive discounts. Tickets are $35, and no tickets will be sold the day of the event. Oenophiles can purchase tickets online at MainStreetLibertyville.org. Upon purchase, tickets can be picked up at Christine Anne Couture, Petranek’s Pharmacy and Improv Playhouse Theater. Visitors must wear a mask indoors regardless of their vaccination status.
Saturday, September 25; 1-4 p.m. Tickets: $35 per person. Downtown Libertyville.
“A fisherman should always have a good net income.” The Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Zion Park District invite anglers of all ages and skill levels to their Free Youth Fishing Derby at Shiloh Park in Zion. Prizes will be awarded to fisherpeople, categorized by age group. Fishing poles are available for those who don’t own one. All participants will have the chance to win raffle prizes and giveaways. The Lake County Health Department will be on-site offering COVID-19 vaccines for individuals ages 12 and older. Free COVID-19 rapid tests, as well as hand sanitizer and masks will also be available. Attendees that need a break from the hook, line and sinker, can visit the Illinois Conservation Police’s Wildlife Education trailer. C&J Gourmet Sandwiches will also be in attendance preparing free fare for hungry bellies. Space is limited and registration is required. Anglers must register at ZionParkDistrict.com.

Pack your picnic basket, select your favorite bottle of wine and sit on the lawn for the final time this year at Ravinia Festival. The Highland Park staple closes out its season this weekend. On Friday, Grammy award-winning artist and Lake County native, Andrew Bird takes the stage. The former Lake Forest-dweller is known for his unique style of violin playing, implementing sonic overtures and accents that defy any traditional boundaries of the instrument. Bird’s performance will be joined by special guest, The Flat Five. Ms. Lauryn Hill’s performance on Saturday, September 24 has been postponed to 2022.
